Montessori education is based on the work of Maria Montessori, an Italian pediatrician whose research in the first half of the last century gave birth to an educational system that has spread throughout the world. Dr. Montessori developed a philosophy based on children's natural development and their intrinsic desire to explore, discover and learn from the world around them. Education, according to Dr. Montessori, is not an end in itself, but rather an aid to life.
"The art of teaching is the art of assisting discovery." - Mark van Doren.
"Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel." - Socrates.
Learning to be kind and courteous is as important as learning the sounds of letters. Learning to prepare a simple snack and clean up afterward is as important as learning to count. Montessori education is academic, but also involves the physical, emotional and social development of the child.
